About

Originally from New York State, Dan is a fourth year Doctoral student, currently working with Dr. Carryl Baldwin on projects related to auditory cognition and mental workload assessment. He received his BA in Psychology from American University in 2005, and MA in Psychology from George Mason University in 2010.

Projects

A selection of recent projects:

Mental Workload Assessment

As a member of the lab of Dr. Carryl Baldwin, Dan has been studying potential metrics for real-time mental workload assessment. Potential metrics include those based on electroencephalography (EEG), eye-tracking, cognitive pupillometry, and behavioral performance.

Automotive Safety Design

Dan was part of a team of 5 students who designed the Speed Limits for Inclement Conditions or SLIC interface. The SLIC interface is a novel speedometer design that provides cues for suggested speed limits based on current weather and road conditions. The SLIC team was one of three winners of the North American ESV Student Safety Technology Design Competition (21st, 2009), chosen to represent North America at the international competition in Stuttgart, Germany, June 2009. See much more about SLIC, including video from recent TBD News coverage.

Single-trial ERP variability during speech comprehension

In conjunction with Brian Taylor and Dr. Carryl Baldwin, Dan has recently been investigating single-trial variability in the N400 event-related potential (ERP). Quantification of single-trial variability in the N400, viewed to be an index of language comprehension, may provide further insight into how language is processed and understood.
